Present data agreed with previous literature showing that female rats are more active than males in physical tasks (Archer, 1975; Burke et al., 2016; Masur, 1972; Presby et al., 2021; Scholl et al., 2019; William Huck & Price, 1976). Performances of male and female rats differed further after training, irrespective of the experimental context.

An exception to this would be the higher number of fecal boluses eliminated in the open field by saline-treated females than by males, which is contrary to most other reports (Hughes and Hancock, 2016; Masur, 1972; Russell, 1973). Although currently inexplicable, a similar (but often strain-dependent) sex difference has been reported by some previous authors (Archer, 1974; Gray et al., 1975; Valle, 1970).

So far, it is recognized that females show higher levels of activity and motivation to explore, and lower anxiety level, compared to males in most strains of rodent [33–35]. Sex differences in the time spent in the central area in the open-field test at P21–22 and the total distance moved in the elevated plus maze test at P11W were compatible with those found in previous reports.
