Differential Effects of Invasive Anodal Trans-spinal Direct Current Stimulation on Monosynaptic Excitatory Postsynaptic Potentials, Ia Afferents Excitability, and Motoneuron Intrinsic Properties Between Superoxide Dismutase Type-1 Glycine to Alanine Substitution at Position 93 and Wildtype Mice
2022, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :However, MNs innervating slow (S) muscle fibers remain largely unaffected until end-stage ALS (Pun et al., 2006; Hegedus et al., 2008). Physiologically, FF MNs have the highest firing frequencies (Manuel and Zytnicki, 2011) and density of Ia proprioceptive synaptic contacts (Basaldella et al., 2015), providing a powerful excitatory drive to spinal MNs (Binder et al., 1993). However, the effective synaptic drive is equal between MNs subgroups (Binder and Powers, 1999).
Non-uniform Effects of Nociceptive Stimulation to Motoneurones during Experimental Muscle Pain
2021, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :Non-uniform effects are perhaps not surprising. Changes in motoneurone excitability could be mediated by; (i) synaptic inputs that change the motoneurone input resistance (Powers et al., 1993) from any source (e.g., cortical, spinal, etc); or (ii) changes in intrinsic motoneurone properties secondary to modification of ionic conductance by neurotransmitters/neuromodulators or neuroactive peptides (Binder et al., 1993; Todd and Spike, 1993) and modification of persistent inward currents that contribute non-uniformly to motor unit discharge (Mesquita et al., 2020). Animal studies show variable effects of neurochemical activation of nociceptive neurons (group III/IV muscle afferents) on both synaptic inputs (Kniffki, et al., 1981) and membrane properties (Windhorst, et al., 1997).
Oxytocin and vasopressin enhance synaptic transmission in the hypoglossal motor nucleus of young rats by acting on distinct receptor types
2010, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :Recordings were obtained from neurons situated near the lateral border of the XII nucleus. They were selected on the basis of the following criteria: (i) they were located outside the boundaries of the XII nucleus; (ii) they were smaller than motoneurons, as judged by IR-DIC videomicroscopy; (iii) in contrast to motoneurons, they failed to display a minimal firing frequency following dc current injection (Kernell, 1965; Binder et al., 1993); (iv) they could display spontaneous firing activity, a property never observed in XII motoneurons. To test the effect of vasopressin on these non-motoneurons, recordings were done in the cell-attached configuration.
