IV nicotine self-administration in rats using a consummatory operant licking response: Sensitivity to serotonergic, glutaminergic and histaminergic drugs
2014, Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological PsychiatryCitation Excerpt :The operant licking response has a long history of use in operant conditioning studies (Hulse, 1967; Miller and Debold, 1965; Sprott et al., 1970). Operant licking can be easily conditioned to trigger rewarding contingencies (Buxton and Allison, 1990; Sclafani and Ackroff, 2003). Conditioned operant licking is sensitive to the dopamine actions in the nucleus accumbens (Robbins et al., 1983).
IV nicotine self-administration in rats using the consummatory operant licking response
2010, Physiology and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :This paradigm will be used in the current project to model smoking addiction, including the consummatory habit to determine if different therapies are needed to combat this type of nicotine self-administration. The licking response in operant conditioning has a long history use in operant conditioning studies and it can be easily conditioned to trigger rewarding contingencies [1,7,10,16,17]. Conditioned operant licking is sensitive to the activity of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens [14].
