(2015) demonstrated that the Pb sends projections to the OPC, PC, CM, and PF. The Su5 receives massive JCMS proprioceptive input, conveyed by trigeminal mesencephalic neurons, whereas the Pb does not (Shigenaga et al., 1988; Fujio et al., 2016). The Pb relays nociception and visceral inputs (e.g., taste and cardiorespiratory information) (Herbert et al., 1990; Feil and Herbert, 1995); the Su5 does not receive these inputs.

Hyperpolarization-activated current (Ih) was recorded in MTN neurons, which were distinguished by their round soma, as they are proprioceptive primary afferent neurons (Chung et al., 2015; Shigenaga et al. 1988a, 1988b). As previously described, hyperpolarizing step potentials induced inward current in all of the MTN neurons, which was composed of two components; a fast, instantaneous current and a slowly developing current (Ih), which did not show any inactivation during hyperpolarization (Kang et al., 2004; Khakh and Henderson, 1998; Tanaka et al., 2003).

To evoke EPSPs in MMNs through the activation of MesV afferents, stainless steel concentric bipolar stimulating electrodes (resistance of 200 kΩ at 500 Hz, outer diameter of 100 μm; USK-10, Unique Medical, Tokyo, Japan) were placed on the trigeminal motor nerve (5 N) in slices (Gemba et al., 2015) that contained MesV afferents from the jaw-closing muscles and the periodontal ligaments (Shigenaga et al., 1988, 1989). A sodium channel blocker lidocaine N-ethyl bromide (QX-314, 5 mM) was added to the internal solution of the patch pipettes to block antidromic action currents in MMNs, and EPSPs evoked in MMNs following the stimulation of MesV afferents (eEPSPs) were isolated (Gemba et al., 2015).
