The vestibular nuclei play an important role in maintaining postural stability and gaze by integrating afferent signals from the labyrinth of the inner ear, the visual and proprioceptive sensations and issuing efferents to the spinal cord (in monkeys: Roy and Cullen, 1998, 2001; Gdowski and McCrea, 1999, 2000; in cats: Peterson and Coulter, 1977; Donevan et al., 1992a,b; in rats: Lannou et al., 1982; Fuller, 1985; Niklasson et al., 1988; Dieringer and Meier, 1993; Reber et al., 1996; Plotnik et al., 1999; Brettler et al., 2000; Bácskai et al., 2002; in frogs: Matesz et al., 1997, 2002a,b).

The LVN of frog and mammals and the mammalian MVN control head and eye position during body displacement (Brodal and Pompeiano, 1957; Donevan et al., 1990; Fanardjian et al., 1999; Bacskai et al., 2002; Matesz et al., 2002; Boyle et al., 2004). In contrast, SVN projects predominantly to the motoneurons that control eye movements, whereas the DVN is involved in the control of limb movements in cat (Peterson and Coulter, 1977; Spencer et al., 1992). In addition, neurons responsible for the vestibulo-autonomic responses are located in the MVN and DVN in cat (McCall and Yates, 2011).

Identified vestibulospinal neurons in the cat were large, multipolar neurons reminiscent of the NPNFP neurons in the MVe and SpVe (Peterson and Coulter, 1977, Fig. 1). They were found most densely in the LVe but were also scattered in the SpVe and MVe and absent from the SuVe (Peterson and Coulter, 1977, Fig. 2). The labeled cells in the reticular formation may also be the source of reticulospinal axons (Holstege and Kuypers, 1982; Peterson et al., 1980).
