Summary

The commissural connections of the five subdivisions of the auditory cortex of the cat have been studied using the Nauta method. The total commissural projection of the auditory cortex is confined to the homotypical area of cortex of the contralateral hemisphere. The subdivisions have different patterns of commissural connections: AI sends commissural fibers to AI and AII; AII sends fibers to AII only, but it receives fibers from AI and AII; EP and the suprasylvian fringe are reciprocally interconnected with the corresponding region of the opposite side; the insular area neither sends nor receives commissural fibers. Within each of the subdivisions which receives commissural connections there is an area which is less densely connected than the rest of the field; this area is most clearly demarcated in AI where it is in the representation of the lower frequency range.
