In neurobiology, fractal analysis has been used to describe and quantify neuronal growth [24,25], arborization patterns [26], and how individual neurons fill their dendrite fields [27] as well the degree of straightness of individual dendrites. In other biological systems, fractal analysis has been used in quantifying a broad range of cellular and micro-anatomical structures including, the distribution of bronchial capillaries around large airways [28], capillary branching during normal angiogenesis [29], and the microvasculature complexity associated with tumor development [30].
