PITX2 is the first transcriptional marker of tooth development and is specifically expressed in the oral and dental epithelium (20, 21). A previous report on the role of PITX2 in craniofacial development using targeted deletion of Pitx2 isoforms in the mouse revealed decreased Lhx6 expression in the maxillary primordial of the Pitx2 null mutant mice (40).
