2022, Ecological InformaticsCitation Excerpt :The exact sensitivity range to changes in absolute geomagnetic values is unclear and likely varies by species, internal states, and external conditions. Some experiments suggest sensitivity ranges from 15 nT to 200 nT for total intensity (Beason and Semm, 1987; Semm and Beason, 1990), 2° to 5° for inclination (Schwarze et al., 2016), and at least 8° for declination (Chernetsov et al., 2017). There are even fewer experiments that have explored how wild migrants respond to the geomagnetic field during the actual migration and what strategies they use for orientation and positioning.

Recordings made from this nerve showed a response with even a 0.5% change in the Earth's magnetic field (Semm and Beason, 1990). In studies in the nerve cells of molluscs, it was shown that they could respond to magnetic fields with a change in the electric current in their nerve cells (Lohmann et al., 1991).
