Abstract

Hemiballismus was produced experimentally in the baboon by injection of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) antagonist picrotoxin into the globus pallidus/subthalamic nucleus of the conscious animal. The abnormal movements appeared in the limbs contralateral to the injected side and were of a character similar to those reported following lesions of the subthalamic nucleus.
