Influence of the vestibular system on the neonatal motor behaviors in the gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica)
2023, IBRO Neuroscience ReportsCephalic sensory influence on forelimb movement in newborn opossums, Monodelphis domestica
2013, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :This shows that 5G cells send many more processes to the brainstem than to the cord (the latter can be direct processes or collaterals of processes going to the brainstem). Likewise, and expectedly, a greater number of neurons were labeled in the brainstem areas known to project to the spinal cord in neonatal opossums (Wang et al., 1992) after TRDA applications to the caudal brainstem than to the cervical cord. These results provide evidence for an indirect action of the trigeminal system on the cord, notably through the RF and, to a lesser extent, through the Sp5 (see also Cabana and Martin, 1984 for the opossum Didelphis virginiana).
Developmental expression of spontaneous activity in the spinal cord of postnatal opossums, Monodelphis domestica: An anatomical study
2009, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :The long propriospinal connections between the cervical and lumbar segments develop mainly during the first two postnatal weeks (Cassidy and Cabana, 1993). Some reticulo- and vestibulospinal fibers are present in the cervical and lumbar enlargements around birth (Table 3; Wang et al., 1992; Pflieger and Cabana, 1996), but most projections from the brain grow into the cord over the three to four weeks after birth in the opossum (Wang et al., 1992). This work is a first step in understanding how spontaneous activity affects the development of spinal motor networks in our model species and how its expression may differ from what has been reported in other species.
