2016, Handbook of Behavioral NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :For detailed discussions of this topic, the reader is referred to recent reviews on the topic (Goldberg and Reynolds, 2011; Schulz and Reynolds, 2013). There are three main candidate mechanisms that have been proposed to underlie the pause response: (1) feed-forward inhibition via activation of GABAergic interneuron by extrinsic glutamatergic inputs (Bennett and Wilson, 1998; Chang and Kitai, 1982; DiFiglia, 1987; DiFiglia and Carey, 1986; Nanda et al., 2009; Sullivan et al., 2008; Szydlowski et al., 2013) and possibly via axon collaterals of spiny neurons, as well (Gonzales et al., 2013; Martone et al., 1992); (2) dopaminergic input from the SNc (Straub et al., 2014; Wieland et al., 2014); or (3) glutamatergic input from the parafascicular (Pf) nucleus of the thalamus (Bradfield et al., 2013; Brown et al., 2010; Ding et al., 2010; Galvan and Smith, 2011; Lapper and Bolam, 1992; Schulz et al., 2011; Sidibe and Smith, 1999; Thomas et al., 2000). The true mechanism must account for the following established properties of the pause response.
