The initial insight that masculinization of the SNB was dependent on AR was obtained by studying Tfm rats (Breedlove and Arnold, 1981). A similar SNB phenotype is observed in Tfm and ARKO mice (Thomas et al., 2006b; MacLean et al., 2008), although loss of Ar function in mice tends to reduce circulating testosterone, complicating interpretation.
