Comparable reduction in Zif268 levels and cytochrome oxidase activity in the retrosplenial cortex following mammillothalamic tract lesions
2016, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :In contrast, an earlier study assessing cytochrome oxidase activity after bilateral anterior thalamic lesions only found a decrease in layer 2 of retrosplenial granular b (Mendez-Lopez et al., 2013). The apparent differences between the findings from anterior thalamic and MTT lesions may reflect indirect versus direct loss of innervations, given that changes in cytochrome oxidase can reflect transsynaptic disconnection (Wong-Riley et al., 1978; Wong-Riley and Riley, 1983). Alternatively, methodological differences, e.g., time post-surgery, the extent to which the lesions encompass the anteromedial and anteroventral thalamic nuclei, and the length and type of behavioral training used, may have contributed to the different pattern of changes.
Neuroprostheses for restoring hearing loss
2015, Implantable Neuroprostheses for Restoring FunctionCochlear implants
2013, Handbook of Clinical NeurophysiologyCitation Excerpt :A SNHL typically induces atrophic rather than degenerative changes to neurons within in the central auditory pathway, although neural loss can occur if the cochlea is damaged during an early critical period in development prior to the onset of hearing (Tierney et al., 1997; Mostafapour et al., 2000). The cessation of afferent activity following a SNHL results in a number of changes in the central auditory pathway including a rapid and significant shrinkage of auditory brainstem neurons (Powell and Erulkar, 1962; Moore and Kowalchuk, 1988; Pasic and Rubel, 1989; Saada et al., 1996); changes in the metabolic status of these cells (Wong-Riley et al., 1978; Durham et al., 1993); and significant reductions in the volume of the CN in long-term deafness (Hardie and Shepherd, 1999). In addition, a SNHL also modifies synaptic morphology at the level of the CN (Ryugo et al., 1997; Redd et al., 2000), and higher auditory nuclei (Walmsley et al., 2006).
Innervation and activity dependent dynamics of postsynaptic oxidative metabolism
2008, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :Since an increase in mitochondrial Ca2+ concentration activates various dehydrogenases and ATP synthase necessary for aerobic respiration (McCormack et al., 1990; Hansford and Zorov, 1998; Duchen, 2000; Brookes et al., 2004), the result of Ca2+ imaging substantiates that flavoprotein signals indicate the upregulation of oxidative metabolism. It has long been proposed that mitochondrial energy metabolism and neuronal activity are positively correlated during development but direct evidence for this idea was still wanting (Wong-Riley et al., 1978; Schwartz et al., 1979; Mata et al., 1980; Wong-Riley, 1989; Erecinska et al., 2004). Here we show that the level of oxidative metabolism in the target cell is sensitive to innervation and synaptic input at the developing Drosophila NMJ.
